This sweeping saga, based on the book by Alexander Münninghoff, tells the compelling true tale of his own family across three generations. Using epic flashbacks, with reconstructions of pivotal moments, it is both a coming-of-age story and a journey into the past of some of recent history’s darkest times.
It starts in 1969, the Summer of Love. When Alexander falls in love with the free-spirited Ellen, she confronts him with the hidden war past of his family. During an emotional, at times desperate, search for understanding and reconciliation with his former Nazi father, wealthy authoritarian grandfather, and longlost mother, he comes to realise who his parents really were and tries to rebalance the scales of history. In the process, Alexander becomes a fullyfledged husband, son, and father. At its core, the series is about a legacy and the heavy burden that can come when it is imposed. It is about the choices we make – leading to conscious and unconscious inheritance – and the personal legacy from parent to child.
